When to Visit Africa: The Best Times for Safari, Gorilla Trekking & Adventure

Africa is a continent of breath-taking contrasts—from sun-drenched savannas to misty mountain forests. But when is the best time to go? That depends on what you want to experience! Whether you’re seeking epic wildlife encounters, gorilla trekking in lush rainforests, or a beach escape in Zanzibar, timing is everything.

We’ve created this ultimate calendar to help you plan the perfect trip.

Rwanda & Uganda: Gorilla Trekking – When to Go?

Best time: June to September & December to February (dry season)
Rainy season: March to May & October to November (more challenging but rewarding!)

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda is an experience like no other—an intimate encounter with majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The dry season offers easier trekking conditions, but here’s a secret: the rainy season is a hidden gem. Yes, the trails are muddier, but the jungle is lush, atmospheric, and less crowded, plus permits are often easier to secure.

Gorillas don’t have a strict breeding season, but births increase slightly in the dry months, as food is more abundant.

South Africa: Safaris, Cape Town & Secret Seasons

Best time: May to September (Winter & early Spring) for safaris – November to March for Cape Town’s beaches

South Africa offers some of the world’s best game viewing during the dry season (May to September). With sparse vegetation and wildlife gathering around waterholes, your chances of spotting big cats, elephants, and rhinos are at their peak.

But here’s an insider tip: May and September are “secret seasons.” You’ll get cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and stunning golden landscapes—all while avoiding peak-season prices!

If you’re heading to Cape Town – November to March is ideal for sun-soaked beaches, outdoor adventures, and wine-tasting in the Cape Winelands.

Victoria Falls: When to Visit for the Best Views – Zimbabwe & Zambia

Best time for peak water levels: May to August (impressive but very misty!)

Best time for clear views & Devil’s Pool: September to November

Best time for safaris in Hwange & South Luangwa: July to October

Victoria Falls is spectacular year-round, but the experience changes dramatically. May to August offers the most powerful water flow—thunderous, misty, and dramatic. If you want to swim in the infamous Devil’s Pool, visit September to November when water levels are lower.

Kenya & Tanzania: The Great Migration & Kilimanjaro

Wildebeest Migration:

  • July to September (Kenya’s Maasai Mara – river crossings!)
  • June to July (Tanzania’s Western Corridor – dramatic chases!)
  • January to March (Calving season in Southern Serengeti!)

Best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro:

  • June to October & December to early March (clear skies, dry conditions)

The Great Migration is one of the world’s most incredible wildlife spectacles. Over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles thunder across the Serengeti and Maasai Mara, dodging hungry crocodiles and big cats along the way.

For those conquering Mount Kilimanjaro, avoid the rainy seasons (March–June & November–December)

Zanzibar: The Best Time for an Indian Ocean Escape

Best time: June to October (cooler, dry season – great for diving!)
December to February: Warm & sunny, but occasional short rains

Zanzibar’s pristine white beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant spice markets make it a dream destination. If you’re planning to dive or snorkel, the dry season from June to October offers the best visibility.

For fewer crowds and a more tranquil experience, December to February can still be pleasant—just watch out for the occasional tropical shower!

Namibia, Botswana & Madagascar: Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures

Namibia (Etosha, Sossusvlei): June to October (cooler, best wildlife viewing)
Botswana (Okavango Delta): June to October (dry season – best for safaris by boat!)
Madagascar:

  • May to October (dry season – best for lemurs, chameleons, and epic landscapes!)
  • November to April (lush & green, but some areas can flood!)

Namibia’s otherworldly landscapes and Botswana’s luxurious Okavango Delta safaris are at their best in the dry months. Meanwhile, Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot, home to rare wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. Lemur baby season? November to April.
