Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Set in the Nakasongola district of Uganda, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is home to the only wild rhinos found in the country. They form part of a re-introduction project started by the Rhino Fund of Uganda as well as the Ugandan Wildlife Authority. The sanctuary is currently home to 15 southern white rhinos.
The ultimate aim of this project is to expand the population of these mammals in Uganda through a breeding program. In time, once the population increases significantly, the rhinos will be reintroduced to the wild and into national parks throughout the country. Due to extensive poaching in Africa, these rhinos are protected by close to 80 park rangers as well as heavily armed security guards. They are watched 24 hours a day to ensure their safety and stay in an area of around 70km², surrounded by electric fences. This adds an extra level of security for these endangered animals.
The sanctuary is a must visit, not only to see these incredible creatures but a host of other animals that call it home. These include a range of reptilian species as well as 40 other mammals such as antelope, monkeys, hippos, crocodiles and numerous types of birds. Of course, the prime stars are the rhinos and guided tours are the best way to see these impressive creatures. Here, you will be taken extremely close to the rhino population and are able to view them in their natural habitat, learning more about them from experienced guides. Don’t forget your camera!
Other activities in the sanctuary include guided nature walks, bird watching, canoe rides as well as camping. The outlying community also benefits from the numerous education and community programs run here. Conservation awareness programs are run in over 200 schools in the region as well as at the sanctuary itself, highlighting conservation and the plight of the rhino in Africa.
